Reddit is now one of the places where AI assistants learn what people think of a brand. Google and OpenAI both signed data agreements with Reddit in 2024, and Reddit threads appear often among the sources that AI answers cite. For a consumer brand, that changes the job of community management. A helpful comment in the right subreddit shapes what a buyer reads on Reddit today and what an assistant repeats tomorrow.
This case study looks at 12 months of Reddit community management that Quimby Digital, a women-owned social media agency in Dublin, Ohio, ran as the Reddit marketing agency for a business formation and compliance platform. It covers what the program was, what the numbers were, and what other brands can copy.
Why Reddit matters for AI visibility

Search used to send people to ten blue links. Now many questions end in an AI answer, and that answer is built from sources. Reddit is a strong source for three reasons.
- People ask real questions there. “Which service should I use to form an LLC?” is a Reddit thread long before it is a prompt.
- Answers are voted on. Upvotes are a public signal of which answer the community trusts.
- AI companies have access to it. Google announced its agreement with Reddit in February 2024, and OpenAI announced its own in May 2024.
A brand cannot buy its way into those threads. Ads sit beside the conversation, not in it. The only way in is to take part.
The program: 12 months of community management
The agency worked on two fronts for the platform.
An owned subreddit. The team ran a brand community that grew to 1.1K members and published 245 posts of its own.
External subreddits. The team took part in communities where small business owners already ask for advice, such as r/smallbusiness and r/Entrepreneur.
The pace was about 10 touchpoints a day across the owned and the external subreddits: posts, comments, and replies. That is a daily routine, not a campaign with a start and an end.
What the numbers show
Over the 12 months the program recorded:
- 299K post views
- 245 owned posts
- A subreddit with 1.1K members
Single comments in r/smallbusiness and r/Entrepreneur earned 50 to 70 or more upvotes each.
These are community numbers, not counts of AI citations. They matter for AI visibility because of what they leave behind: a public record of upvoted contributions with the brand’s name on them, in the threads that buyers and AI systems both read.
The upvote total deserves a second look. 637 upvotes in a year is small next to one viral video. But an upvoted Reddit comment keeps its place in the thread, and the thread can rank in search and be read by an assistant for years. A viral video fades in days.
Five lessons for consumer brands
1. Answer first, mention the brand second. Reddit rewards useful answers. A comment that reads like an ad is removed or voted down.
2. Be consistent. Ten touchpoints a day for a year builds more trust than a burst of posts in launch week. Communities trust accounts that keep showing up.
3. Build an owned space, but do not stay in it. A subreddit of your own gives the brand a home and a place to send people. The larger audience is in the subreddits that already exist.
4. Follow each community’s rules. Every subreddit has its own rules on self-promotion. Read them before the first comment, and say who you work for.
5. Measure what Reddit gives you, then check the AI answers. Post views, upvotes, and member growth are the direct measures. To see the effect on AI answers, save a set of buyer questions, ask them in ChatGPT and in Google today, and ask them again in 60 to 90 days.
Where to start
Pick the three subreddits where your buyers ask for advice. Read them for two weeks before you post. Then answer one question a day from an account with a real person behind it.
Reddit work is slow, and that is its strength. Each useful answer stays public, and both people and AI assistants keep finding it.
