The Business of Making Life Feel Effortless

Making Life Feel Effortless

Last Updated on September 15, 2026 by Team TBH

Over the years, we’ve seen some brands gain value with their audience because they’ve become integral to how people live their lives, whether it’s by means of a product that adds more, or a service that simplifies some part of their lives.

For instance, think about those services you return to repeatedly without ever really considering alternatives. You already know how they work, what to expect, and how much effort something will take when you use that service or product. People find value in the removal of that decision fatigue, which is why, when a brand can consistently remove unnecessary work from a decision, going back often becomes easier than starting again somewhere else. A good example of this is a platform like Skyscanner, where they have already done the work of finding the cheapest available flights for you, you just need to choose the ones that suit your needs like preferable dates and times, the best.

People Remember How Much Work Was Involved

One of the most important things people will remember about a brand is how customer service is handled. A difficult customer experience can encompass anything from expecting the customer to do more work than is necessary to get a hold of someone or something, or even difficulty reaching someone who can solve the problem.

For instance, you might want to make an inquiry, only to discover another form needs completing (annoying!). You may give someone your details over the phone, only to be asked for the same information again. Or you’ve spoken to the third person who’s promised to “escalate,” or an AI chatbot that runs you in circles, and you’re left trying to work out who can actually deal with things…

Any of this will turn what should be a straightforward purchase or booking into something that takes more time and attention than it should, which is something you’ll remember the next time you need the same service. Now, you’re no longer considering only the price or what’s being sold, but you’ll also remember how much work was involved in getting it.

Familiarity Makes the Next Decision Easier

The advantage of brand familiarity is especially clear in the travel sector. For instance, say you’re heading to Chicago for a few nights. You could open several booking sites, compare unfamiliar properties and spend an evening reading recent reviews… or you could return to that hotel chain you used last summer, where you enjoyed yourself, you know who to contact and how, and you know exactly what kind of room you want.

The big names usually have really good brand reputation. The Marriott is one example, having been named by Nerdwallet as its best hotel chain for 2026, with its large footprint among the factors contributing to the result. That can add to the appeal for new guests, while returning guests are relying on familiarity and not having to start researching from scratch.

Making Something Feel Simple Takes Work

What makes an easy customer experience, though? It’s not necessarily true when less is happening; often, the opposite is true, and it’s just that the complex behind-the-scenes admin isn’t visible to the customer.

Good accommodations will make the booking experience as straightforward as possible, making sure to manage their availability, payments, and reservations out of sight of the guests (who don’t need to understand every system involved). The hotel should manage these, ensuring that the customer only has to deal personally with aspects that affect their stay, and not with additional scheduling, documentation, or changing requirements beyond that.

(Good accommodations will also find that this is part of the challenge of building a reputable brand: figuring out which parts of the process need the customer’s attention, and which can be handled for them.)

The More Complicated the Journey, the More Simplicity Is Needed

Now imagine you need to get from New York to a meeting in a smaller US city that isn’t well served by direct commercial flights. Suddenly, there are so many more decisions involved. Which departure airport makes sense? Where should you land? How does the timing work around the meeting? What needs to change if the schedule moves?

Anyone looking to book private jet travel will know that this is where the service around the journey is critical. Rather than needing to research each part separately, the traveler can explain to a private jet charter company where they need to be and when; the company can then coordinate suitable airports and timings, keep those arrangements together when plans change, and tailor the logistics around those requirements. This way, the burden of complexity shifts out from the traveler to the service provider.

This is also a useful way to understand why some brands become so difficult to replace. When the customer doesn’t have to spend hours piecing together the process themselves, and know that a brand can competently take it off their hands, they’re likely to remember the time and attention they got back.

Ease Is What Gives People a Reason to Return

Of course, having less to organize doesn’t mean people will want less information. There’s a balance to get right, since customers still need to understand the decisions that affect them and know what’s happening when something changes. Otherwise, the work simply takes another form: instead of organizing everything yourself, you’re chasing updates or trying to work out what’s coming next.

When the process feels fluid to a customer, that ease will start turning into loyalty.

If your last hotel search didn’t involve an evening comparing unfamiliar options, you’d remember that. If a complicated journey was arranged without you having to research airports and coordinate every change yourself, you’d remember that too.

So when the same need comes up again, returning to a brand you already know would make the most sense. Trying somewhere else means doing some of that work again and finding out whether another company can deliver the same experience (a gamble that may not always pay off).

Why Effortless Brands Stick

The brands that make life feel effortless aren’t necessarily doing less. On the contrary; in many cases, they’re doing more behind the scenes so their customers don’t have to. It’s one reason that convenience is difficult to reduce to speed alone. Saving someone time is important, certainly, but so is removing unnecessary decisions and taking complicated work off their plate.
